On the face of it, Dawn Silvernail made a very unlikely murder suspect. She was a 50-year-old married woman with an adult son and no police record. College educated, she was a state-employed social worker who worked with the disabled and had an unblemished record.

Brought in for questioning, Dawn admitted to having sexual relations with the victim but denied that she’d had anything to do with her death. However, there was at least one potential link to the murder. Dawn owned a .45-caliber Ruger. That weapon was taken into evidence by the police and test fired. The results were disappointing. It did not match the bullets that had killed Susan Fassett. Ballistics experts would later determine that the barrel of the .45 had been tampered with. That, of itself, was suspicious. Nonetheless, the weapon was useless as a means of comparison with the lethal bullets.
